>> reporter: d.c. councilman jack evans recently told 9news he would like to see the redskins playing in the district again within the next five years. the feeling being that they would tear down the existing rfk stadium which is home to d.c. united and a few concerts, and build a new facility here with a domed top. since the 1990s, the skins have been playing their home games at fedexfield in landover, maryland, but the team's resurgence under rgiii has d.c. insiders wishing and hoping again. the quarterback underwent surgery today to reconstruct his blown knee. >> i think if the redskins had bob this would be described as courageous act on the part of the player. >> reporter: many blame team doctors for rgiii remaining on the field after getting hurt. >> it probably raises the question of should medical professionals play a greater role in whether a player

continues to play or no. we've obvious done that with concussions. >> reporter: bruce johnson, 9news. meantime in prince george's county the county executive's office says the redskins have been a great partner and the county looks for qard to a long- term relationship. gun control now taking center stage at the white house. vice president joe biden is meeting with people from both sides of the issue trying to come up with a proposal to bring it to president. members from the group one million moms for gun i don't remember at today's meeting. that was a group formed after the new town tragedy. the organization's goal, honor the second amendment but with some reasonable restrictions on guns. >> we don't allow people to produce plutonium in order to make their own nuclear weapons. there are limits. >> in addition to the guns themselves, new jersey's republican governor chris christie says violent video games and mental health issues need to be addressed as well. tomorrow mr. biden meets with gun owners and reps from the national rifle association. virginia opened its general

assembly session today and the governor's plan to kill the gas tax is already under fire. >> reporter: i'm peggy fox in richmond where the start of this your's general assembly has democrats blasting the governor's trance for taigs plan. they say would it put an even larger tax burdennen on northern virginia. >> the house of delegates is now in session. >> reporter: the plan won't be an easy sell to republicans, either. governor mcdonnell wants toll eliminate the state's gas tax and raise the state's sales tax. part of the new revenue plus part of the general fund would go to transportation. republican delegate tim hugo of fairfax backs the plan. >> it is a creative solution. we fund it on 17.5 cents a gallon. if the goes to 54.5 there's no room. >> reporter: but democrats say raising taxes on all other virginians makes no sense. >> northern virginians current

pay about 30% of the transportation funds. the governor's package takes that up 50%. >> reporter: also, they say, cars may use less gas but the combustion engine is not going away in our lifetime. in richmond, peggy fox, 9news. >> reporter: i'm matt jablow in annapolis where top lawmakers made it very clear that banning assault weapons would be at the top of their legislative agenda this year. four weeks after the shooting at sandy hook elementary, an incident that he revived the national conversation about gun violence, annapolis lawmakers are now preparing for a debate on the merits of adding stricter gun control laws. >> are you prepared to say this will be a priority of yours this year? >> sure, it will be one of many priorities. >> governor martin o'malley --

>> there's no responsibility more fundamental than public safety. >> reporter: o'malley said he believes the majority of lawmakers will support the legislation. in annapolis, matt jab loss, 9news now. tonight investigators are trying to figure out what caused a commuter ferry to area in new york city. >> completely rocked me. people were like human projectiles flying into the law. five crew members have already passed breath alliesers. a judge is expected to announce this friday if there is enough evidence to bring colorado theater shting suspect james holmes to trial. prosecutors wrapped up their case today showing pictures from holmes' cell phone taken just before the massacre. one of them showed holmes with a wide grin slashing his glock.

one person's very bad day can cause a ripple effect and get commuters enraged. that's what happened last night. police coaxed a person who had threatened to jump off the bridge to come back down. but as surae chinn reports, by then everybody had been sting traffic for hours. >> goes to show that a horrific thing can paralyze the whole city for hours and hours and hours. >> i went around the long way. >> reporter: eduardo rincon left his store to direct traffic because he didn't see anybody doing it. traffic took even longer to clear. police finally talked the man off the bridge but the damage was done. >> it doesn't take long for traffic to get backed up. >> reporter: d-dot and law enforcement helped by changing the light signals. they divert traffic once they can get here but that leaves

choke points on other major highways. a decade ago a tobacco farmer held a two-day standoff driving his tractor onto the national mall. and in 1998, traffic came to a standstill on the woodrow wilson bridge until d.c. police shot the man in the leg with a beanbag. >> i'm not sure there's any way to prevent the aftermath. >> reporter: d-dot practices mock drills. it's important to know that alternative route ahead of time. on the key bridge, surae chinn, 9news. >> we contacted metro police. they say their first priority is to preserve life. non lethal force was not used because the person was above the freeway. police used alerts and twitter to let people know of the situation. according to the wall street journal apple is work on

that cat williams gets in trouble on the regular, doesn't he. lighting up with your hopes and thoughts regarding the knee surgery on robert griffin iii. shelby, thumbs up. thank you god for looking after him and pray he comes back fully healthy. similar sentiments from gear. hope you get well soon. this was without a doubt the most enjoyable season i have had watching the skins in a long time. just wish i hadn't seen you that long last week. i hope this is also a lesson for all involved. no game is worth the risk. yeah, i know, 20/20 hindsight.

yeah, gary, but hindsight doesn't make it wrong. this season was a fantastic ride that ended really badly. and rick is not quite ready to let go of that last part. still, very unhappy about how this happened on sunday, the decision making process about rgiii continuing to play did not work, and that is on mike shanahan. that's why he is paid 7 million. to be smart, not stupid. but sadie is looking to the future. rgiii, please take the time to full recover. this is contributing to your few. protect it. playing football is not for life so take care of you. very nice thoughts, but seems to me football by its very nature and culture is not a sport than courages taking care of you. in fact, we saw that all too clearly on sunday. but i would also like to see more of your e-mails, the address mailbag@wusa9.com, or just reach out to me on twitter
